Must be appropriately sized for every person on board.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Sound-signalling device, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/camping\/health-safety\/whistles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whistle<\/a> (pealess, so it still works when wet).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A buoyant heaving line (15 metres in length) so you can heave someone out of the water should they fall in.\r\nAn emergency paddle in case yours falls into the water (consider getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/shop?q=Paddle+Leash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paddle float<\/a> to avoid this).<\/li>\r\n \t<li>A bailer or handpump to remove water that\u2019s accumulated in the bottom of your kayak.\r\nA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/camping\/camping-accessories\/lighting\/flashlights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waterproof flashlight<\/a> to send emergency light signals at night should you experience an issue.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIf you are taking part in a guided excursion or renting a kayak from a store, these items should be provided for you. Make sure that\u2019s indeed the case before you set off on the water.\r\n\r\nIt may also be worth adding the below to this list:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>a big sponge: to remove any unwanted water that may have collected at the bottom of your kayak due to the waves, or from when you first got in.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a neoprene skirt (for sit-in kayaks): to protect your bottom half from the cold, the sun, the rain and the waves.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a folding anchor (for fishing kayaks) so you can either drift fish or moor near a specific area.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/outdoor-gear\/nautical-gear\/accessories\/dry-bags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dry bag<\/a> or sleeve so you can safely store your personal effects (maps, phone, camera, snacks, etc.)<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/outdoor-gear\/nautical-gear\/accessories\/pumps-plugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scupper stoppers<\/a> to plug the scupper holes and stop water from coming into your Sit-on-Top kayak.\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/outdoor-gear\/nautical-gear\/accessories\/pumps-plugs\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/qsfQvriDAga42NykTb-W6q30p7DHnkLSeA-D0AHEQDO8mSvYNuXx_vckvYcHLaxfhMHjRiXmulmtftjr6yZuQhE1ALh173DUU_s6N126n-kJ0Qs6yHil8eWs3Uyh5KYNQUYaOFC2\" alt=\"Pumps plugs\" width=\"254\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>a paddle float so you can get back into your kayak more easily should you capsize. The clothes you take with you will vary depending on your kayaking activity (whether it\u2019s recreational, sea or river kayaking), the length of your outing (a few hours on calm waters, or several days on the river for example). In any case, here is a list of essentials:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/outdoor-gear\/nautical-gear\/watersport-clothing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neoprene wetsuit<\/a> to keep warm in case of bad weather. To do this, you have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/outdoor-gear\/nautical-gear\/accessories\/transportation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> few options<\/a>, but these will vary depending on your vehicle:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>a kayak roof rack: in the shape of a J, very stable and secure, for up to two kayaks. These are made specifically for each car model.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a cargo trailer should you need to transport more than two kayaks. This will require a trailer hitch that fits your car.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>straps and foam blocks: the cheapest and simplest way to transport your kayak, but not necessarily the safest. Some kayaks are quite heavy and therefore difficult to carry. Fortunately, there are carts specifically designed to help. Made with two wheels and a support frame, all you need to do is attach one side of the kayak to the cart and pull it to your launching point.
