The sun begins to pierce through the\u00a0mist\u00a0drifting slowly above the river. Not a breath of wind. The water is perfectly still. A smallmouth bass leaps from the water with a loud splash. I\u00a0can't\u00a0help but think,\u00a0<\/span>\"Rest in peace, fly that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.\"<\/span><\/i>\u00a0A little farther away, the canoes sit neatly lined up, patiently waiting to be launched once again.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe low rumble of the nearby rapid reminds me that,\u00a0sooner or later, adrenaline will quickly replace the caffeine\u00a0slowly\u00a0making its way through my veins. One thing at a time. For now, I sip my coffee while taking in the slow-moving spectacle offered by the extraordinary wilderness of the\u00a0Dumoine\u00a0River. The Dumoine River: a legendary river in the heart of the Outaouais<\/h2>\r\nLocated between the T\u00e9miscamingue and Outaouais regions, the Dumoine River is one of Quebec's must-visit destinations for passionate canoeists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis was my very first descent of this legendary river, known for its unique combination of technical rapids, breathtaking wilderness, and rich history.\u00a0I'd\u00a0heard about it more times than I could count. For some, paddling the\u00a0Dumoine\u00a0is a lifelong goal. For others,\u00a0it's\u00a0an almost mythical place, existing somewhere between true wilderness and accessibility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThat feeling becomes even stronger when you consider its course. The\u00a0Dumoine\u00a0forms the boundary between\u00a0T\u00e9miscamingue\u00a0and the Outaouais. It begins in La V\u00e9rendrye Wildlife Reserve and\u00a0flows for\u00a0150\u00a0kilometres\u00a0before joining the Ottawa River. Paddling the\u00a0<\/span>Dumoine<\/span> River: an adventure for experienced canoeists<\/span><\/h2>\r\nThe\u00a0Dumoine\u00a0River is renowned for its many rapids and long stretches of whitewater. Even before setting my canoe on the water, I knew it\u00a0wouldn't\u00a0be a river that could be paddled without solid technical skills. While some sections\u00a0remain\u00a0relatively accessible, others demand the ability to read the river quickly,\u00a0anticipate\u00a0its movements, and make the right decisions at exactly the right moment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nSimply put, this is not a river for beginners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe\u00a0moment we launched, I quickly realized just how true that was.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe most popular starting point is\u00a0located\u00a0at\u00a0kilometre\u00a064 of the river, accessible by an old logging road.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe arrived there early in the afternoon. The launch drops directly into a Class II rapid stretching\u00a0nearly 200\u00a0metres.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nI trust my paddling partners, so we set off with little hesitation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe riverbed twists from left to right.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn the first bend, right in the middle of the rapid, I was stunned to spot half of a canoe lodged high in the cedar trees several\u00a0metres\u00a0above the water.\u00a0Most likely carried\u00a0there by\u00a0floodwaters,\u00a0it was\u00a0probably all\u00a0that remained of an expedition that\u00a0hadn't\u00a0ended well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe warning\u00a0couldn't\u00a0have been clearer: if you\u00a0don't\u00a0have the necessary skills,\u00a0don't\u00a0venture onto this river.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBefore leaving, I had counted roughly 60 rapids along the route, ranging from very easy to completely\u00a0unrunnable. Why is the <\/span>Dumoine<\/span> River considered one of Quebec's most beautiful rivers?<\/span><\/h2>\r\nBeyond its rapids, it was the river's character that left the deepest impression on me. As the days went by, the landscapes\u00a0seemed to grow\u00a0more expansive, and the feeling of isolation\u00a0became almost\u00a0tangible. The\u00a0Dumoine\u00a0constantly gives you the impression of travelling through a wilderness that\u00a0remains\u00a0truly untouched, both breathtaking and untamed.\u00a0It's\u00a0likely this\u00a0balance between raw beauty and a genuine sense of remoteness that has earned the river its legendary reputation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs I finished my coffee, I thought back to all the conversations I'd had about this river. People always told me the Dumoine was one of Quebec's most beautiful rivers. Towering cliffs, old-growth forests, crystal-clear water, and the feeling of being completely alone in the world. It was said to be one of the favourite rivers of legendary canoeist and filmmaker Bill Mason, who paddled it every year. That morning, it was easy to understand why.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nLost in quiet contemplation as the sunrise unfolded in brilliant\u00a0colours, a red-tailed hawk shattered the silence with its unmistakable cry, the same call often used in American films in place of the\u00a0rather unimpressive\u00a0call of the bald eagle. The moment could hardly have been more perfect, and without realizing it, the bird had just given us the signal to begin our second day on the river.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThroughout the day, one rapid followed another. Some could be run on sight, while others required scouting from shore to\u00a0identify\u00a0the safest line. Our feathered companion, the hawk, stayed with us for much of the day. By late afternoon, after completing a particularly technical stretch of whitewater, we\u00a0emerged\u00a0onto a small, calm pool surrounded by towering cliffs. The\u00a0hawk's\u00a0nest was clearly nearby, and as if wishing us good luck, it let out one final cry that echoed throughout the valley. We all smiled, taking in the magnificent spectacle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThat evening, we found a campsite that could hardly have been more beautiful. Right in the middle of the longest portage, a stunning campsite overlooked a Class V rapid.\u00a0That's\u00a0when I realized one of the \"problems\" with the\u00a0Dumoine: every campsite\u00a0calls to\u00a0you. Every place has something unique that makes you want to spend the night there. If\u00a0I'd\u00a0had two months to paddle the river instead of a few days, I\u00a0probably would\u00a0have given in every time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nFrom our chosen campsite, the view was simply spectacular. Sitting around the campfire, we ate in silence as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon. Lost in thought, I watched the flames dance. I thought about the hundreds of thousands of people who had travelled this river over thousands of years. Somehow, I like to imagine that I share with them the same deep appreciation for this land. I like to imagine that 5,000 years ago, an Anishinaabe paddler stood in awe before the same towering 150-metre cliff near the end of the river. <\/span>Ultimately, travelling through this landscape feels like one of the most meaningful ways to connect with those who came before us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nLooking back, the Dumoine River did not disappoint. Its beauty is undeniably striking and unlike anywhere else. Is it Quebec's most beautiful river? That's a difficult question. I'd have to paddle the province's 15,000 other rivers and streams, or perhaps its 3.5 million lakes, to answer with certainty. Tips for paddling the <\/span>Dumoine<\/span> River (and many others!)<\/span><\/h2>\r\nWhile the\u00a0<\/span>Dumoine<\/span> offers an unforgettable experience, it also requires careful preparation. <\/span>Here are the key recommendations <\/span>I would<\/span> give to anyone planning to paddle this remarkable stretch of water or <\/span><\/span>any other technical whitewater river in Quebec.\r\n

1. Take a whitewater canoeing course<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nGet trained! Taking a course certified by Canot Kayak Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> is <\/span>probably the<\/span>\u00a0best advice I can give. Besides being a lot of fun (seriously!), learning from experienced instructors allows you to progress much faster than relying on trial and error.\u00a0<\/span>It's<\/span>\u00a0also the most effective way to develop the skills needed to paddle technical rivers like the\u00a0<\/span>Dumoine<\/span>\u00a0independently. These courses teach you how to recognize hazards on the river, one of the most essential skills any canoeist can develop.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

2. Build your experience gradually<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nNothing replaces experience. Time spent paddling and camping teaches you about both your abilities and your limits. The more nights you spend outdoors and the more\u00a0kilometres\u00a0you paddle, the better\u00a0you'll\u00a0understand\u00a0what's\u00a0within your capabilities, and what might put you at risk.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nAn elephant is eaten one bite at a time. Start with shorter trips, and once you feel comfortable, gradually increase both the length and the difficulty of your expeditions.<\/span>\r\n

3. Allow more time than you think you'll need<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nWhenever\u00a0you're\u00a0paddling a river for the first time,\u00a0it's\u00a0wise to build extra time into your itinerary. Scouting rapids may take longer than\u00a0expected,\u00a0portage trails can be rough or poorly maintained, and unexpected delays are part of the adventure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBesides, who would say no to a few extra nights on a dream river?<\/span>\r\n

4. Organize your gear for portages<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nOn technical rivers, always think about portaging.\u00a0Almost every\u00a0rapid can be\u00a0portaged\u00a0if\u00a0necessary, but\u00a0carrying poorly organized gear can quickly turn the experience into a miserable one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nTransport your equipment in large dry bags<\/a> or portage barrels fitted with harnesses. Inside, organize your gear into smaller stuff sacks. Carrying one large bag filled with ten smaller bags is far easier than hauling ten loose bags scattered everywhere.<\/span>\r\n

5. Plan your meals wisely<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nThink in terms of meals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>One of the most common mistakes I see among people preparing for their first multi-day expeditions is bringing far too much food out of fear of running out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Instead, create a complete meal plan, prepare a detailed grocery list, and, most importantly, stick to it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBe realistic about portion sizes as well.\u00a0Yes, people\u00a0generally eat\u00a0more while on\u00a0expedition, but\u00a0it's\u00a0unlikely that someone who normally eats half a bagel for breakfast will suddenly eat three whole bagels every morning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOne trick I like is organizing food by day. For example, one bag\u00a0contains\u00a0everything needed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Day 1. That way, I\u00a0don't\u00a0have to empty my entire food barrel looking for the spices needed for the first dinner.<\/span>\r\n

6. Prepare for the unexpected<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nExpect the unexpected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Murphy's Law tells us that anything that can go wrong eventually will, and sometimes everything happens at once. Your communication device can fail just as someone suffers\u00a0a serious injury.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nFor every outdoor trip, I strongly recommend using what we call a \"guardian angel.\" This is someone who knows exactly where\u00a0you're\u00a0going and expects to hear from you at a predetermined time each day. If they\u00a0don't\u00a0receive any news from you within a reasonable\u00a0timeframe,\u00a0they'll\u00a0know\u00a0it's\u00a0time to contact emergency services.<\/span>\r\n

7. Always carry an emergency kit<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\nNo matter how short the outing, always\u00a0bring a small \"just in case\" kit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOn every trip, I carry a first aid kit, a reliable communication device, fire-starting supplies, a water bottle, a snack, a small microfibre towel, and emergency clothing (essentially a rain poncho and a set of thermal base layers).
