Encourage these initiatives, they are perfect for your most expensive purchases: winter coats and boots, outdoor equipment, technical clothing.\r\n\r\nFor everyday clothing, local or second-hand purchases are preferred, while also considering the composition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/men\/clothing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a>, which is the first guarantee of quality."},{"acf_fc_layout":"text_content","content_anchor":true,"anchor_link_text":"Getting to Know Materials and Fabrics","text_content":"<h2>Getting to Know Materials and Fabrics<\/h2>\r\nDo you usually look at the composition of the items you buy? This is THE behaviour to adopt! Each material or fabric has different properties and appropriate maintenance methods. Knowing them makes it possible to predict the durability of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/en\/kids\/clothing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clothing<\/a> and to prolong it. It is pretty simple:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Natural fabrics, such as cotton, linen, hemp, wool, or silk come directly from plants or animals. These are generally the most sustainable materials, in time and in terms of production methods if you opt for organic or certified products. These materials are sturdy, breathable, easy to maintain, and odour resistant.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Synthetic fabrics are chemically made and are entirely derived from coal or petroleum. We are talking here about well-known polyester but also nylon, acrylic, elastane, and many others. They were invented for their technical properties: elasticity, impermeability, or lightness.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Artificial materials combine these two worlds: they come from nature (often wood cellulose) and are chemically treated. They include lyocell, a kind of faux silk, but also viscose or modal. They provide fluidity and shine and are often difficult to crease.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nWhen the time comes to choose, the goal is quite simple: aim for \u201c100%\u201d and naturalness.\r\n\r\nA \"100%\" fabric, made of a single material, is preferable because fibre blends tend to last less: the most fragile material wins out and will deform or damage the entire garment. With mixed materials, you also increase the risk of errors in washing or drying, as some compositions are not intended to last. Little bonus: a 100% fibre is a fibre that is more easily recycled, a real issue in our textile consumption!\r\n\r\nThen, aim for \u201cnatural\u201d because nature is made to last, and you can observe this in clothes! With little transformation, natural materials are resistant, easier to maintain and repair, and require less washing. They are surprisingly versatile with astounding temperature regulating properties. These are the three points of vigilance to memorize and put into practice.\r\n\r\nTo help you, your best ally is the label of your garment, so please don't cut it! On it are written your precious maintenance instructions in bizarre symbols and in several languages.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sail.ca\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/JDLT-symbols-clothing-care.jpg\" alt=\"symbols clothing care\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" \/>\r\n\r\nHand wash, cold wash, dry clean, tumble dry or flat dry, spin dry, iron, products to use: it's all there, you just have to know how to decipher the symbols. Use your favourite search engine to familiarize yourself with these symbols. A few essentials:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Colours do not like heat! Machine wash cold if you want to prevent your clothes from fading.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Wool does not like high temperatures either. Opt for a cold hand wash and air drying.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Hang up your linen clothes to dry. The weight of the wet fibre makes it possible to smooth and soften the garment.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>On the other hand, cotton and wool are materials that deform under their own weight. They must therefore be dried and stored flat.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nRemember that it is with practice that we get to know our clothes, the materials that best suit our uses and the quality manufacturers.
