Second El Capitian in 15 years.
It was time to purchase a new tent after 15 + years of regular use with my original El Capitan tent. The fly just wore out despite silicon spray and seam sealer. Its been on many canoe tripping excursions and kept me dry through wind storms and torrential rain . Of all the different designs and makes on the market including MEC, MSR, Marmot, Sierra Designs, etc, I decided again to purchase an El Capitan 3. Easy to set up with only 3 poles and clips, 2 large vestibules for gear, and good ventilation. I would highly recommend this tent to any car camper or canoe tripper.
Comfy and dry, even during pouring rain
I bought my El Capitan 3 a couple of years ago and enjoyed it on limited camping trips. This year we have been camping more, including a long weekend that featured a lot of rain. The tent was comfortable and roomy (there were 2 of us) and remained cosy and dry throughout the weekend. I love the vestibule, which lets me store stuff outside of the tent but still away from the rain. Got this tent on sale, which makes it an extra great value.
Well thought out and made.
This is a well made tent and is well sized to the three people it is intended for. Especially the vestibules to cover your shoes, while they are left outside during the night, on both sides and the two separate entrances.
The poles appear very strong and the gauge and quality of both fabric and zippers are excellent. After camping in a particularly rocky state camp ground in Maine, I noticed some small pin-sized holes in the floor fabric. This was probably due to the kids taking their shoes in the tent once or twice. If we were more careful it would probably have held up but considering the tent packs fairly tight, the thinner floor fabric makes for a lighter, smaller carrying bundle as long as you take care to use only socks while inside.
I would highly recommend this tent and in fact we intend to buy a second one on Monday for the kids given the quality and practicality of this design.
Good buy at regular price, great buy at sale price.
As an old Scout Leader I've seen Eureka tents put to the test many times and so I can say that Eureka makes a solid product. I recently bought the El Capitan 3 and have taken it on a 3 day whitewater canoe trip. I found it easy to set up and was impressed with the thoughtful design. This tent has many practical features, particularly the ability to fasten back all the doors and flaps. You will not go wrong in purchasing this tent.
