Commitment
Is The North Face Eco-Friendly?
The brand puts nature at the heart of everything it does and promises to protect the places you love to explore, and to put sustainable manufacturing into place from start to finish. It has adopted four commitments to maintain its pledge to sustainability:
Circular economy
The company uses sustainable materials as much as possible in its designs and the aim is to develop circular systems aimed at recycling previously-owned clothing and gear, and reusing raw materials.
Responsibly-sourced materials
The brand is committed to making footwear, apparel and equipment from recycled, regenerative or responsibly-sourced, renewable fabrics and to using 100% responsibly-sourced materials in its clothing by 2025. It has even put the “Exploration Without Compromise” badge on items made with a minimum of 75 percent recycled, organic, regenerative and/or responsibly sourced renewable materials.
Mutual aid collaboration
The brand works with vendors to help them reduce their environmental footprint and with retailers who also share The North Face's mission and values.
Sustainable packaging
The North Face's goal is to eliminate single-use plastic packaging by 2025. In the meantime, the company is working to reduce leftover packaging and design packaging that is more easily recyclable. Only recycled materials are used for product labels and shipping boxes.
Is The North Face cruelty free?
The North Face promotes and improves animal welfare and is committed to tracking the traceability of down and goose feathers used in the manufacturing of various coats, sleeping bags, footwear and accessories.
The company launched the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), an ethical standard, in 2014 in partnership with Textile Exchange, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability, and Control Union, an independent organization, to certify that down does not come from animals that have undergone cruel treatment such as force-feeding or live plucking.
This standard also guarantees the traceability of down in the supply chain. Now, some 40 other brands have adopted the RDS standard and nearly 240 processing plants and commercial establishments have also been certified.
Is The North Face a vegan brand?
The brand is not vegan, as it uses duck and goose down. However, it is RDS certified, which means that the animals from which the down is collected are not mistreated.

You should know that each coat is made with outer fabrics treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish. This finish helps the outer fabric resist water, which will then collect in droplets and fall off quickly before being absorbed into the fabric. Over time, the accumulation of dirt on the outer surface of your coat and your movements can cause a decrease in the performance of these finishes.
If you have a quilted coat such as a ThermoBall
These steps should help reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish. Finally, for optimal performance, you can coat your jacket with a water repellent treatment such as Tectron

Rinse thoroughly to remove all dirt and detergent residue. You can also remove excess water by running an extra spin cycle. Dry your sleeping bag on a clothesline or in the dryer on a very low or cold setting. Check on your sleeping bag frequently to make sure the fabric is not too hot.
