Cut bait rigs for trolling salmon and trout are designed to mimic wounded baitfish, enticing strikes from predatory salmon. These rigs typically consist of a bait head that securely holds a strip of herring or other baitfish, often rigged to create lifelike movement in the water. The bait head is attached to a leader, usually 18 to 48 in. long, which connects to a flasher or dodger that adds extra attraction by creating flash and vibration. Speed is key to get the right movement. When using a whirly gig presentation with cut bait, it’s important to balance the trolling speed and leader length. A typical setup involves placing the whirly gig 6 to 18 in. in front of the bait, depending on water conditions and fish activity. The ideal trolling speed usually ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 mph.
